Touch the Dark Cassandra Palmer Karen Chance Books

Cassie Palmer has a problem. In fact Cassie has quite a few, a psycho mobster vampire who also happens to be her former guardian has found her after 3 years of being on the run; her clarvoiyant abilities seems to be getting more vivid and disturbing; her Billy Joe, her ghostly sidekick keeps disappearing at most inconvenient times and her former roommate isn't quite what he seems. But this is just the start for Cassie things have started to shift in the supernatural ability and it seems that several factions want a piece of her and she is never quite sure who to trust.

What I love about this series is that it grabs you as soon as you start reading and drags you straight into the action. There is almost no let up; hence the warning at the top of the review. Cassie is flung from one dire situation to another. This book also gives you alot of information all at once and on top of everything else going on it can make it an intense read.

The world the Karen Chance has created though is really interesting, full of vampires, weres and mages all kind of living in harmony. And once you have gotten past the intial information overload you can appriciate the complex world the Ms Chance has wrought. Another great thing about this book is the characters. It is told from first person POV and I know this can put some readers off, but I find that I quite like this in UF, especially if I like the person whose head I am inside, like I do with Cassie. Cassie was a great character, she wasn't your usual tough chick who makes pithy sarcastic comments as she kicks the crap out of people, instead she makes pithy sarcastic comments as she runs away or as she is being almost beaten by the enemy.

As for the sexy-dangerous vampires, there are a few to pick from, there is Mircea, brother to Dracula, the seemingly urbane and calm master vampire, so long as you don't piss him off; Louis Cesar (my personal fave) with the long auburn hair and the lethal fencing skills and Tomas hot, sexy and likes to ripe people hearts out with his bare hands. Choices, choices!

This is definately a series I would recommend to those who love Urban Fantasy, it was funny, interesting and action packed and I can't wait to get to the next one

Touch the Dark Cassandra Palmer Karen Chance Books Reviews

So it was so good as far as story telling and action. However, the love interest(s) were so badly written! One minute I was team this one guy--the one saving her and who she was with 90% of the time--and the next minute she's all but having sex with the guy we had been introduced to as an uncle figure! It was uber creepy. It was like the writer didn't know which character she wanted the protagonist to be with, so she wrote them both poorly. It ruined what could have been an awesome book. I want to know what happens with the series. But I'm going to look at the other reviews first because no way am I continuing if the writing is this messed up going forward. Sex with an uncle (figure). Ugh.
TOUCH THE DARK

Touch the Dark is an amazing book, set in a fully imagined magical world that includes vampires, mages, witches, fey, werewolves—all unbeknownst to ordinary humans. This is completely absorbing escape fiction in its highest form.

The heroine, Cassie Palmer, at first seems quite ordinary herself. A secretary at a travel agency, she wears thrift store clothes and walks to work because she can’t afford a car. She reads tarot cards at a dance club on weekends to make ends meet.

But Cassie is a powerful clairvoyant who sees horrific visions of the future. She also sees and talks to ghosts. We soon find out that she has been on the run for years from a vampire mob boss who wants to kill her. So she’s not so ordinary after all.

From the first sentence in the book, we learn that Cassie is courageous and decisive. She is not paralyzed by fear; she takes action.

She is also compassionate and responsible, delaying her escape to warn her roommate not to go home for a few days and to find him a safe place to stay. That kindness almost costs her life—which then takes a totally unexpected turn.

The world-building in this series opener is intricate and satisfying. But the action, ironic humor, and wonderful characters are what makes the book unforgettable and the series enticing.

Cassie herself is an unusual heroine. The people around her (good, bad, and ambiguous) are complex and fascinating, too.

One of the clever things about this series is that we see everything through Cassie’s eyes, yet she often tells us more than she herself understands. Karen Chance is a wonderful writer.

There are so many fun surprises in the book that I don’t want to spoil for you. All I can say is pay close attention to the vampires. Some of them will be familiar figures.

This book has been criticized for being too intricate, too active, too complicated. But I strongly disagree. This is not a beach read that you can skim while watching TV or carrying on a conversation over drinks. It’s a story that lets you escape into another world.

You need to give this book your full attention. And maybe read it a second time. It’s worth it.

Interestingly, the whole book takes place in just a few days. and the whole series (so far) covers only about three-and-a-half months in eight books. Yet this intricate series has taken several years to write.

Since the Cassie Palmer series began (when this book was published), a lot of writers have jumped into the fantasy genre with simple pot boilers and “paranormal romances” designed do be consumed like popcorn, and I’ve seen several reviewers complaining that this book is not one of those. It was not meant to be.

Touch the Dark introduces a wonderful, epic series that now has thousands of devoted fans and has been praised by some of America’s favorite fantasy authors. It will more than repay giving it your full attention—and maybe a second reading.

The series is unforgettable. The characters seem so real that you won’t want to miss a minute of their adventures—or how your opinion of them changes as you get to know them. This book is where it all begins.

Cassie herself is an example of a character who grows and develops over the course of this book and (even more so) over the course of the series. It’s a wild ride and a fun one, so jump on. You’ll be glad you did. And Touch the Dark is the place to start.
This is a series I've come back to time and time again, so if you love urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and hilarious, sassy heroines Cassie Palmer is the right series. It's a constant whirlwind of fighting, sexy vampires, angry mages, and carnality in all its forms. Cassie is unlike most heroines in that she has no training and no real knowledge at the start--just a sarcastic mouth and a knack for getting herself into and out of danger. Along the way vampires, fae, ghosts, and Cassie's ability to see the future come into play as she time travels back and forth. This book is about Cassie trying to figure out how she got saddled with the most powerful clairvoyant position in the non-human world, the Pythia, and whose leading this horse at all. Well worth the action-packed ride and to start off a series that will suck you in.
